About Different Heart Therapy
Why Different Heart Therapy?
In the quiet of an eight-year-old's sleepless night, our Owner, Colleen, composed this heartfelt note to her parents. Little did she realize that this childhood moment would shape the very essence of our therapy practice's name. What once haunted her as her greatest fear - the fear of not fitting into a world seemingly devoid of emotional understanding - has blossomed into what she now regards as her most potent strength.
Today, our mission is clear: Guiding our clients towards embracing their emotions and the beautiful uniqueness that sets their hearts apart.
Meet Different Heart Therapy’s Owner
Colleen Mann-Buxton, MA, LPC, ATR-P
Colleen earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Art Therapy from Lesley University. Driven by the belief that everyone deserves a safe space to explore their inner lives—and that art-making can be a powerful tool in that journey—Colleen has devoted her career to offering both traditional talk therapy and art therapy. Her clinical training included work at Beth Israel Lahey Health’s crisis unit in Salem, MA, and a public high school in Needham, MA, where she honed her relational and compassionate approach. After completing her degree, she gained invaluable experience at an inpatient, residential, and PHP eating disorder facility, as well as an outpatient group practice, before founding Different Heart Therapy.
Colleen also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has shared her expertise as a speaker and presenter at national eating disorders conferences. She specializes in supporting preteens, adolescents, and adults as they navigate eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, depression, and relational concerns. At the core of her work is a relational approach that emphasizes connection, creativity, and collaboration—tailoring each session to meet her clients’ unique needs.
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Colleen has lived in Rochester, NY, and Boston, MA, and now proudly calls Colorado home. Outside of her practice, she enjoys hiking, creating art, and relaxing with a good book or Netflix series alongside her two cats.
Deeply inspired by her clients, Colleen considers them her greatest teachers, continually fueling her commitment to compassionate, personalized care.
